I can only guess, but would assume they played the basic, no-frills kinds of poker. Like 5 card draw, maybe with deuces wild…something like that. I made less than $100 a month net when I first joined the Army in 1971, so I would guess lower-ended enlisted pay averaged $50-$80 a month in the 1940s and 50s(?)…and wagering would necessarily be pretty low by today’s standards. Wagering with cigarettes, chocolate, etc., wasn’t uncommon either. Anything of value.

Well, it depends what form of poker you want to play. If you want to play no limit cash games or tournaments, read Dan Harrington’s books first. If you want to play limit cash games, read Small Stakes Hold Em. Then you need to formulate a bankroll. There are bankroll building guides like Ultimate Poker Bankroll which will help you turn a little bit of money into a few thousand through bonuses and other kick backs pretty quickly. Then you will have to get rakeback, which pays you part of your rake paid back into your account just for playing.

You should also look into high res, wide screen monitors if you don’t have one already. Those make it much easier to play multiple tables at one time. But that is something you can invest in later, since when you are just starting out I would advise just playing one table at a time, then when you are sure you are a winning player, move on to two, then three, then four. You should also look into Poker Tracker which is software that tracks all aspects of your play online. You can get that free through UPB that I mentioned above.

Like most professionals, you have to be more than an expert at your craft, you have to learn the game inside and out.. since you want to be an online pro, you better star by creating an account at an online poker site, build your bankroll and reputation, join tournaments, and win them.. and perhaps next season get a seat at the world series of poker..

There are numerous resources on the internet regarding poker, there are online tutorials, video, e-books, etc.
